MuCEM Marseille UHPC lattice facade by Rudy Ricciotti
Cultural
MuCEM — Musée des Civilisations de l'Europe et de la Méditerranée
Marseille, France · Rudy Ricciotti Architect · 2013

The first large-scale building to use UHPC extensively as both structural member and facade sheathing. 15,000m² of perforated lattice panels envelop the museum — each panel 3m × 6m at just 80mm cross-section. UHPC's strength-to-weight ratio enabled a pedestrian bridge spanning 76m freely at only 1.8m depth. Waterfront site with aggressive salt exposure drove the durability case for material selection.

20,000-seat stadium clad entirely in perforated UHPC panels — the first stadium-scale application of the material. Custom organic perforation pattern allows daylight penetration and visual transparency while providing structural cladding performance. The facade reads as a continuous concrete lace membrane at urban scale, achieving geometry that would be infeasible in conventional precast.

9-story laboratory addition designed as the first Net Zero-capable lab building in New York City. UHPC rainscreen cladding contributes to the building's high-performance thermal envelope while integrating with the existing medical campus. Lab buildings require consistent, low-maintenance enclosure performance across a 75+ year horizon — a core argument for UHPC over conventional alternatives.
